What is the Ames C.art Mural Program?
The Ames C.art Mural Program strives to mobilize artistically inclined youth, adult, and elder residents of out community to create murals and public art projects within Story County, Iowa.
What is the Camustown Mural Project?
The Campustown Mural Project began as an initiative by the Campustown Student Association in the Spring of 2009. The owner of T-Galaxy agreed to the mural’s proposed location on the T-Galaxy building’s north wall. In September of 2009, Ames Collaborative Art (Ames C.art) accepted the invitation by the Campustown Student Association to coordinate and actualize the Campustown Mural Project as the initiation of the Ames C.art Mural Program. The Campustown Student Association will maintain a collaborative role in the project by acting as a liaison with Iowa State University.
Ames C.art has publicized the mural project and collected sketches and ideas from community members through the U.S. mail and at drop-boxes located on the Iowa State University Campus. The Mural Design Team, under the direction of an Artistic Director and an experienced mural painter as Technical Advisor, will then compile all the mural ideas and develop a unified design. The Design Team will map out the mural’s outlines on the T-Galaxy building’s north wall, and volunteer painters from the community will join in the actual painting. Finally, the Design Team will touch up the final mural, adding highlights, adjusting tone, and applying the sealant.
The mural will officially be introduced to the community at a dedication ceremony that will feature live music, food and beverages, storytelling, and an exhibition of all the community artwork that contributed to the mural design.
This collaborative mural project is an entirely volunteer-driven effort intended to bring different populations of the Ames community together: school age children, college students, university staff, city residents, and local artists. The joining together of
different aspects of the community to create a piece of public art which everyone can enjoy will encourage pride in and celebration of the Ames community, while also promoting the Ames C.art message that everyone can make art to share and enjoy.
